Upgrade IKEA Doors
If you have (or are planning on purchasing) kitchen cabinet boxes and hardware from IKEA, but want a look and feel that IKEA doesn’t offer you’ve come to the right place.
Although we make high quality custom cabinets, we understand that custom cabinetry often doesn’t fit into many people’s budgets or schedules. For years we’ve made doors to function with existing cabinetry as well. Our shop and our sales team are fully equipped to handle making doors, drawer fronts, trim, and other components to work with IKEA’s AKURUM and SEKTION kitchen cabinet lines. We can also do the same for PAX wardrobes, GODMORGON bathroom vanities and BESTA storage systems. You can purchase IKEA cabinets and have us make your doors to give you that high quality looking kitchen you have always wanted.
How do I order Doors and Drawer Fronts to fit IKEA cabinets?
IKEA has some great online resources, such as their online kitchen planner which allows you to create a 3d model to place and configure your cabinets. If you’ve taken this route you will be given the option to share a link to or create a PDF of the project. You can send us the link to your project or send us the PDF to sales@scherrs.com. We are very familiar with the configurations IKEA has for the kitchen line and can work from the “item list” generated from the IKEA planner. You will need to build your kitchen or project in the planner with the doors and drawer fronts on the cabinets. Cabinets made by IKEA can have many different configurations for each cabinet model and it’s necessary for us to see how you plan on having each cabinet configured.
If you need help designing your IKEA kitchen there is a resource for designing and planning an IKEA kitchen and that’s over at Inspired Kitchen Design. We can work with their plans as well, just be sure to have an IKEA “item list” to accompany the plans they create with you.
Solid Wood Dovetail Drawer Boxes
We can provide solid wood dovetail drawer boxes to go inside IKEA cabinets. Our drawer boxes will replace the IKEA drawer slide systems. Our drawer boxes will attach to doors and drawer fronts. We also can provide pull out drawer boxes that pull out separately inside the cabinet. We will supply the drawer boxes and drawer slides to work inside the IKEA cabinets. Our drawer boxes can be adjusted height wise as long as the drawers fit in your space.
Modifications
We can do custom size doors and drawer fronts to fit IKEA cabinetry. If you would like any items on your plans to use custom size fronts you will need to let us know which cabinets you would like to include custom size fronts for. You will need to explain how you would like to adjust the fronts different from the IKEA standard setup. An example of what we can do for a base cabinet setup some people like to do a 5″ tall drawer front on top and a 25″ tall door below, and we can do this custom size door to work this way. Another example is you have two IKEA cabinets stacked on top of each other one that is 15″ tall and another 30″ tall cabinet and you would like a 45″ tall door to fit the entire height of these two cabinets, this is something we can do as well. One last example is we can have fronts for the wall cabinets set 2″ below the cabinet. This is an option to replace needing any under light molding or deco strips for under the upper cabinets. These are just a few examples of many more possible setups we can do with our custom fronts on IKEA cabinets.
If you plan on modifying the height or width of IKEA cabinets, you will need to specify which cabinet you are modifying and how you will be modifying the cabinets. You will need to let us know how you would like the fronts figured to fit any modified IKEA cabinets.
We will help with any custom setups you are doing. If we are modifying any fronts to be a different sizes over IKEA standard sizes we are not responsible if any of these custom size fronts don’t perfectly fit your IKEA cabinets. We will figure the adjusted sizes off the information you provide. We can’t 100% guarantee any modified front sizes will fit properly inside the IKEA cabinets.
Other components
If you want any extras included on a quote that are not doors and drawer fronts you will need to provide this information on the email you send us. Below are examples of what you may want included in a quote.
Cover Panels Other names of cover panels are “End Panels”, “Filler Panels”, or “Applied Ends” and are meant to give a finished appearance where needed. Usually cover panels are made to fit on the sides or back of cabinets to give the cabinet a finished look that matches the finish of the doors. Cover panels are figured as slab panels in either a veneer or a painted finish to match the finish of the front doors. We can adjust cover panels to match the style of your doors if you request this option as well. If you have the sizes of the cover panels you want you can list this out when sending in your information for a quote. If you need help with this we can work off your IKEA layout if you provide front and top layout views of your IKEA plans. We can estimate where cover panels will need to go off this layout. We can also always discuss the cover panel placement over email or the phone to make sure everything is accounted for correctly before placing an order with us.
All cover panels are either the dimensions you specify or are made to match the full size of what they are covering, If you would prefer any cover panels to be made oversized to be trimmed to fit on site you will need to let us know this detail. Our standard setup is for the cover panels are made to fit with minimal trimming needed but this detail can be adjusted if you prefer the cover panels to be oversized.
Toekicks, Fillers, Deco Strips, and Moldings We can provide any of this if you want any of these items included on the quote just include this information on the email. We can either estimate how much of this material you need or you can provide the total length you want to order.
When it comes to installing our toe kicks on IKEA cabinetry there are a few methods to accomplish this setup. The first option is if you purchase IKEA legs for the base cabinets. You will want to attach IKEA toe kicks behind our toe kicks simply by running wood screws through the IKEA toe kick and into our toe kick to accomplish this task. If you do this the toe kicks will just snap into place to the IKEA legs. Another option is you can build your own base. The last option is if you want more flexibility on where the legs go under the IKEA cabinets and this will allow the toe kick to be made in different heights as well.
Custom appliance panels We can do custom appliance panels as long as the appliance is panel ready. All you need to do is provide the make and model of the appliance you are using and we will quote the panels off this information.
Custom Cabinets We do provide custom cabinetry that can fit in well with the IKEA cabinets. If there is a spot or two where you want to do something custom that you cannot do with IKEA cabinets that is where we come in. If you have a drawing or an inspirational photo of what you want you can send this over in the email. We will also need the Width x Height x Depth of the cabinet you want to order and if there is anything else special you want done on the cabinet let us know. Our cabinets are custom made so we offer many options that are not available with IKEA cabinetry.
A few technical details
For normal cabinet doors built for IKEA cabinets, we automatically assume they will need bored holes for the European style concealed hinges that IKEA provides to you. Drawer fronts are pre-drilled to attach to IKEA’s drawer slide hardware. Pull-out doors will need to be drilled by the person installing the cabinets on site. (Pull-out doors are cabinets that have a door that functions as a drawer). All doors and drawer fronts are under-sized 1/8″ (1/16″ on the left and right—this is called the “reveal”). In the end this creates a 1/8″ gap between all cabinet doors and drawer fronts. This clearance is needed to allow the doors and hinges to operate correctly.
Lead-Time
On the quote we will match the item numbers for each door and drawer front to match the cabinet item numbers listed on your IKEA Planner you provide us. This will allow you to more easily go through the quote we send you. Please allow a couple business days before expecting a quote as we go through every detail of every customers’ project plans. We move fast but we don’t like to rush the planning and measuring of something as important as your kitchen.
We can send you your doors, drawer fronts, and other components unfinished, clear-coated, primed, or painted any color available from Sherwin Williams. Choosing to order unfinished or going with our engineered door option will improve how quickly we can send your order out. Our lead times depend on how busy we are when you place an order. Unfinished door lead times is generally 2-4 weeks out, engineered door lead times are generally around 4 weeks, and projects with finish work can be out 2-4 months. Everything we do gets custom made after placing an order we do not carry any in stock items.
